Conneaut Creek Irish Red Setters

Dedicated to the Purest Challenge... the promotion of the Irish Red Setter as a class Shooting Dog, field trial competitor, and gunning companion.

Our kennel name comes from Conneaut Creek which is located within walking distance to our home in Northeastern Ohio. We live in Ashtabula County which has sixteen picturesque covered bridges; the covered bridge spanning Conneaut Creek is called the State Road Covered Bridge. Conneaut Creek is actually world renown for steelhead fishing. Eagles nest nearby and we sometimes see them flying overhead. We love to take young pups and run them along the shallow creek bed. It's a great sway to introduce water and a relaxing way to spend a hot summer afternoon. We have owned and raised Irish red setters for over 25 years and have been hunting or trialing with our setters since the early 1990s. We have owned or currently own Irish red setters from several different working bloodlines, most notably those bloodlines developed due to the dedication of members of the National Red Setter Field Trial Club.

Irish red setters are well mannered and have an ideal temperament for use as hunting and field trial dogs.  They exhibit exceptional intelligence, high hunting desire, class, and style.  Irish red setters break out easily and without harsh discipline.  In the field, they exhibit excellent biddability and are a pleasure to handle.  They are exceptionally loyal to family members, and make great companion dogs as well as outstanding hunters.

Dog training and care takes much time, very similar to raising children. The only difference is that children eventually grow up; bird dogs are basically genetically "locked in" their juvenile stage of development. They require consistent and dedicated care if they are to be effective in the hunt. Red setters do respond to positive training methods. We have been especially fortunate to have members of the Crooked Creek Conservation Club in northeast Ohio, as well as members of the National Red Setter Field Trial Club, who have provided guidance and assistance in our breeding and training program.  We would love to correspond with anyone who has a similar interest in hunting with Irish red setters, or any gun dog.
